The Mexico City Architecture Tour

Sketch it and the Mexicans will build it! When you discover Mexico City's exceptional variety of buildings for the first time, you may wonder if this legend is not in many ways true. Make no mistake though, Mexican architects are among the world's very best and the country has a strong tradition of design that can be seen throughout the city. Although it was strongly influenced by Spanish and French architecture at the start, but always with a distinctive touch reflecting local traditions, Mexico City gradually developed a style of its own, often drawing on its rich pre-Colombian heritage. During the course of this day-long tour you will discover the city's architectural wonders, from its 16th century colonial buildings and its “village” heritage to its soaring modern skyscrapers. You will learn how the growth of the city's population from 240,000 in the mid-1850s to 24 million today has affected urban planning and how the city surmounted the disastrous effects the 1985 earthquake. We will take you in the footsteps of Mexico's most famous architect Luis Barrangan, but also in those of the country's up and coming young generation of architects who are shaping the Mexico City of tomorrow.
